AlphaServer 2100 MS45x Memory Module Installation

This document outlines the installation procedure for MS450-BA/CA and MS451-CA DRAM memory modules in AlphaServer 2100, 2100 RM, or 2100 CAB systems. It specifies that these systems support between one and four memory modules, offering capacities from 64MB (MS450-BA) to 512MB (MS451-CA), and utilize EDC logic for error detection and correction.

Configuration details explain that while up to four modules can be installed in the bottom system bus slots, two of these slots have a dual function (memory or CPU). If a CPU module is installed in the MEM1 slot, only two memory modules are supported. For AlphaServer 2100 RM and 2100 CAB systems, memory modules should be installed with their components facing the right side of the enclosure.

Maintaining proper airflow is critical; any system bus slots not populated with a printed circuit board must contain a plexiglass module (PN 74–48265-01).

Before installation, strict precautions are necessary: MS45x modules are static sensitive, requiring an antistatic mat and wrist strap. Users must perform an orderly system shutdown, including setting DC and AC power switches to off and unplugging all AC power cords. A warning also advises waiting at least two minutes after power removal before handling CPU or memory modules due to potential high temperatures.
