MS3n0 MEMORY OPTION INSTALLATION CARD

Order Number: EK-MS300-IN

This document serves as a quick reference guide for installing an MS3n0 memory option in Digital AlphaServer 4000/4100 systems.

Key Information and Steps:

  1. Safety Precautions: Users are warned about high temperatures of memory and CPU modules (wait 2 minutes after power off before handling) and advised to wear an antistatic wrist strap.
  2. Before You Begin:
    • Memory modules within a pair must be identical in type (synchronous or EDO), size, and speed (50ns or 60ns). Different pairs can be mixed within a system.
    • The system motherboard must meet specific minimum revision requirements (e.g., AlphaServer 4000 A02+, AlphaServer 4100 B07+ for certain module types).
    • The SRM console code must be version 3.0 or higher for 1 GB modules, and a URL for updates is provided.
  3. Exposing the System Drawer: Detailed instructions are given for shutting down the system, powering it off, and safely exposing the system drawer in pedestal, H9A10-EB/EC, and H9A10-EL/EM cabinet configurations. A warning specifies that only trained personnel should handle cabinet drawer extraction in some cases.
  4. Installing the Memory Option:
    • Remove the cover from the system card cage.
    • Identify the correct slots using provided diagrams (AlphaServer 4000/4100 motherboards), inserting the largest memory modules into the lowest-numbered high/low slots first.
    • Insert each module into its slot and secure it by tightening the captive screw.
  5. Verifying the Installation:
    • Replace covers, power up the system, and ensure power-up diagnostics pass.
    • For DIGITAL UNIX/OpenVMS: Use the show memory command from the SRM console.
    • For Windows NT: Access AlphaBIOS Setup, navigate to "Display System Configuration," then "MC Bus Configuration."
    • For All Systems: Use the test memn command (where 'n' specifies a memory pair or '*' for all) from the SRM console.

Additional information on supported options can be found on the provided Digital Equipment Corporation website.
