SN-KZPCA-AA SCSI Controller Installation Instructions

Order Number: SN-KZPCA-AA

This document provides installation instructions for the SN-KZPCA-AA single-channel LVD SCSI controller in Alpha Workstations, assuming the operating system is already installed on the system disk using an embedded SCSI controller.

Key points:

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows NT (4.0+SP3), Tru64 UNIX (4.0F), and OpenVMS (7.1-2).
  • Performance Notice: For optimal performance, only LVD-capable disk drives should be connected to this controller. Other non-LVD storage devices (e.g., tape drives) should remain on the embedded SCSI controller.
  • Configuration Restriction: When connected to external single-ended expansion enclosures, drives may not be visible to console firmware until both the system and enclosures are power cycled.
  • General Installation Steps:

    1. Shut down the operating system and power off the system.
    2. Install the controller into an available 32- or 64-bit PCI slot, involving removing the system cover, potentially an option card, and the slot cover.
    3. Change SCSI bus cabling: Keep non-LVD devices on the original embedded controller. Move LVD disks to the new SN-KZPCA-AA controller using the provided new SCSI bus cable and terminator.
  • OS-Specific Steps:

    • Windows NT: After physical installation, boot NT, install the necessary driver from the provided CD, shut down, change cabling, then power up and boot NT. A driver diskette should be created from the Symbios SDMS CD for future use.
    • OpenVMS: After physical installation, change cabling, then power up and boot the operating system.
    • Tru64 UNIX: It is not recommended to install this controller on an existing Tru64 UNIX system disk. Users must back up any desired files, as Compaq recommends a complete reinstallation of the Tru64 UNIX operating system (version 4.0F or later) from the CD after installing the controller and changing the cabling.
