KN30n CPU INSTALLATION CARD

Order Number: EK-KN300-IN

This document is a quick reference guide for installing the KN30n CPU module into an AlphaServer 4000 or 4100 system.

Key points include:

  • Safety First: Users are warned about high-temperature components (wait 2 minutes after power-off) and advised to wear an antistatic wrist strap. Specific warnings apply for certain cabinet types, recommending only trained personnel for system drawer removal.
  • Overview: The process involves exposing the system drawer, installing the CPU module, and verifying the installation.
  • Exposing the System Drawer: Detailed steps are provided for different system configurations (pedestal, H9A10-EB/EC Cabinet, H9A10-EL/EM Cabinet), typically involving shutting down the system, removing covers/doors, unplugging power supplies, and carefully sliding out the drawer.
  • Installing the CPU Module: This involves removing the system card cage cover, identifying the correct slot for the new CPU module (CPU 0, CPU 1, etc., depending on the AlphaServer model), and then inserting the module by pushing down on its levers.
  • Verifying the Installation: After replacing the card cage cover and powering up, verification is done through power-up diagnostics. For DIGITAL UNIX/OpenVMS systems, the show cpu command from the SRM console is used. For Windows NT, AlphaBIOS Setup's Display System Configuration and MC Bus Configuration are checked. Additionally, the test cpun command can be used from the SRM console for all systems.
