This cover letter from Digital Equipment Corporation informs customers purchasing DIGITAL AlphaServer 8200 or 8400 systems that their units may have a console firmware version different from the standard V5.1-30 pre-installed. This exception applies if the system includes an ML200 Prestoserve PCI NVRAM module (resulting in T5.1-18 for 625MHz CPUs or V5.0-102 for 440MHz CPUs) or if it's a 440MHz system with more than 10 CPUs (which will have V5.0-102). Customers are explicitly instructed not to install console V5.1-30 if any of these conditions apply. An accompanying "DIGITAL AlphaServer Firmware Update CD" is included, containing the necessary V5.0-102 and T5.1-18 console versions. These specific firmware restrictions are anticipated to be lifted with the release of console V5.2, expected in June 1998. The letter is from Roger Allen of DIGITAL AlphaServer Firmware Engineering.
