Digital AlphaServer 1000 Series Upgrade Information

Order Number: EK-ALPSV-UP

This document is a guide for customers and Digital Services on upgrading to a Digital AlphaServer 1000 Series system. Its primary purpose is to identify which options (such as hard drives, tape drives, CD-ROMs, graphics cards, monitors, keyboards, and expansion boxes) from various older Digital systems can be removed and reused in the new AlphaServer 1000 Series.

The guide provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for safely removing these upgradeable options from a range of specific legacy systems, including various models of DEC 2000 AXP, DEC 3000 AXP, DECsystem 5000, and MicroVAX 3100. A critical part of the upgrade process involves checking and potentially changing SCSI ID settings on drives to ensure compatibility with the new system, with specific ID settings outlined in an appendix.

General upgrade procedures across systems include shutting down the system, disconnecting cables, removing covers, and then carefully removing drives, media devices, or option boards. The document also provides warnings about static discharge. Once options are removed, users are directed to other Digital guides for installation into the AlphaServer 1000, advised to update service contracts, and instructed on how to return their old systems to Digital. Some legacy systems are noted as having no upgradeable options, requiring only return procedures.
