Performing a Processor Upgrade on the Digital Personal Workstation, I Series System

Order Number: XX-CD5E4-D7

This document provides a step-by-step guide for installing and configuring a processor upgrade on a Digital Personal Workstation, I Series system. The process involves both hardware installation and subsequent software configuration.

Hardware installation begins with powering down the system, disconnecting all external devices, and removing the system cover. Users must then release and carefully remove the main logic board (MLB) from the chassis. The new CPU and heatsink assembly are installed into the ZIF socket on the MLB, ensuring correct pin alignment, before the MLB is reinserted and secured, and the system cover and external devices are reconnected. A crucial caution is included to wear a grounded wrist strap to prevent system damage from static discharge.

After hardware installation, the system should display a "Dual CPU present" message upon powering on. For software configuration, users are instructed to back up their system disk and data, then reinstall the Microsoft Windows NT operating system. During Windows NT reinstallation, the "Upgrade" option must be selected to convert the operating system kernel from single-processor to multiprocessor, effectively enabling the new processor configuration. Once these steps are complete, the dual processor upgrade is fully installed and configured.
