AlphaStation 600 Series I/O Subsystem Information Supplement

Order Number: EK-AL600-IS

This document provides reference and configuration details for the I/O subsystem options available with the AlphaStation 600 Series systems, which support 32-bit or 64-bit PCI options.

The core I/O components described are the KZPAA-AX SCSI Disk Controller and the Ethernet controllers (either the Etherworks Turbo PCI Controller DE435 or a P2SE module).

The KZPAA-AX SCSI Disk Controller features a single-ended, narrow, active SCSI 2 port. It supports up to seven internal SCSI devices (such as a CD-ROM drive, another 5.25-inch option, and up to three hard drives) connected via a wide SCSI cable. Critical configuration rules include:

  • Do not connect external SCSI devices.
  • Ensure no SCSI IDs are duplicated.
  • Do not use the SCSI EISA bulkhead connector.
  • Internal SCSI devices should not be terminated, as termination occurs at the ends of the bus.
  • An active narrow SCSI terminator (P/N 12-44837-01) from the accessory kit must be used at the rear bulkhead (SCSI bus A slot) for proper internal SCSI port termination.
  • The KZPAA-AX module's internal jumpers must remain in the factory "disable terminator mode."

The Ethernet Controllers (DE435 and P2SE modules) perform similar functions, supporting Twisted pair, ThickWire, and ThinWire connections. The DE435 module is initially configured for ThinWire Ethernet, with instructions provided to reconfigure it for ThickWire by repositioning a jumper bank. For the P2SE module, three internal connectors are present but not used in this configuration, and no devices should be connected to them.
