AlphaStation 250 Model 4/266 Upgrade Information

Order Number: EK-AL250-UG

This document is an upgrade guide, published in May 1995, for customers and Digital service representatives, detailing how to transfer compatible hardware options from older Digital systems to a new AlphaStation 250 Model 4/266. It identifies specific internal/external disk drives (e.g., RZ25L, RZ28), CD-ROM/tape drives (e.g., TLZ06, RRD44), monitors, and expansion boxes that can be reused from existing systems such as DECstation, VAXstation 4000, DEC 3000 series, and DEC pc AXP 150.

The upgrade process is summarized in five main steps:

  1. Note SCSI IDs and Drive Names: Identify and record the current SCSI ID settings and names of drives in the existing system.
  2. Remove SCSI Drives: Detach the drives from the existing system, referring to that system's documentation.
  3. Set SCSI IDs on the Drives: Adjust the SCSI IDs of the drives if necessary, especially if they conflict with a factory-installed drive in the AlphaStation 250 (typically set to ID 0).
  4. Install the Options and Complete the Upgrade: Install the transferred options into the AlphaStation 250, following its specific user information manual, and update any customer service contracts.
  5. Return Your System to Digital: Pack and ship the old system and any non-upgradeable components to Digital using the provided return-address label.

The guide also includes warnings about antistatic precautions during hardware handling and provides contact information for technical support and ordering additional documentation.
