VAXserver/MicroVAX 3000-series System Conversion Guide

This document is a comprehensive guide for installing conversion kits (640XR and 655XR) into VAXserver/MicroVAX 3000-series systems to upgrade or change their configuration. It is intended for Digital Customer Services personnel and licensed self-maintenance customers.

  • Chapter 4 describes the installation of another 655XR kit for converting VAXserver/MicroVAX 3500/3600 (pedestal) or 3800/3900 (cabinet) systems to VAXserver/MicroVAX 3800/3900 systems. This also notes memory and CPU I/O panel changes.

Key responsibilities are highlighted, including the customer's duty to back up software and the installer's need to follow antistatic precautions, unpack and inventory kits, perform hardware installation (removing old modules, installing new ones, connecting cables, applying labels), run diagnostics, and verify system operation.

Appendix A contains necessary forms for recording the conversion and returning old CPU and memory modules for credit, along with a list of CAS district offices. Appendix B provides tables of model numbers before and after conversion to assist with labeling.
