DEC STD 012-4

This document, DEC STD 012-4, "Unified Numbering Code (UNC) - Software Numbering Conventions," dated August 17, 1992, specifies the application of Digital Equipment Corporation's Unified Numbering Code (UNC) for identifying software worldwide.

The core of the standard defines the 2-5-2 (XX-XXXXX-XX) or 2-5-2.4 (XX-XXXXX-XX.XXXX) alphanumeric part identifier structure for software. It details various "Part Classes" (Qx), such as:

• Kits: Software Documentation, Media, Subassemblies, Country Information Packages, and Diagnostic Kits (QA, QC, QQ, QZ).
• Licenses: General, Packaged, and Diagnostic Licenses (QL, QM, QP, QX).
• Services: Project and Consulting Services, Software Product Services, Cross-Functional Service Packages, and Diagnostic Services (QS, QT, QU, QW, QY).
• ASSETS: encompassing licenses, media, documentation, and reusable solutions (Q2, Q3).

The document also provides historical software numbering conventions (from Revision E) for older products that do not use the current system. It outlines the responsibilities for maintaining the standard, including an Advisory Committee, and processes for updating tables, requesting part block identifiers, and managing waivers.
