Rainbow MS™-DOS Version 2.11 Documentation

Order Number: AA-DY51A-XV

This document provides comprehensive instructions for updating the MS-DOS operating system to Version 2.11. It is primarily targeted at users who are already running MS-DOS Version 2.05 or 2.01, with a note for new users to consult the "Getting Started" guide.

The update process varies based on the current setup:

  1. Diskettes with MS-DOS Version 2.01 and application files: Users must format a new diskette with the MS-DOS 2.11 system files (FORMAT B:/I/S), then copy new MS-DOS utility programs and existing application files to it, being careful not to overwrite the new COMMAND.COM or other system files with older versions.
  2. Diskettes with MS-DOS Version 2.05: The update involves using LDCOPY for the loader, SYS for system files, and COPY for COMMAND.COM and other MS-DOS programs to the existing diskette.
  3. Copy-protected diskettes (from Version 2.05 or 2.01): This is a multi-step process requiring users to copy existing files to a temporary diskette, reformat the copy-protected diskette with the new MS-DOS 2.11 system files, then restore the backed-up files, again avoiding overwriting new system components. A minimum of 50,000 bytes of free space is required on the copy-protected diskette.
  4. Hard Disk: Instructions depend on whether the hard disk has a 10-megabyte partition.
    • Without a 10-Megabyte Partition: The update uses LDCOPY, SYS, and COPY commands to place the MS-DOS 2.11 loader, system files, COMMAND.COM, and new MS-DOS utility programs onto the hard disk partition(s).
    • With a 10-Megabyte Partition: This requires a full backup of hard disk files, followed by re-initialization and re-partitioning of the hard disk using the Winchester Utility Program Version 2.0 (recommending an 8MB/2MB split as 10MB partitions are no longer an option). After formatting the new partitions, backed-up files are restored, and new MS-DOS utility programs are copied.

The document also includes standard copyright, trademark information, and a reader comments form for feedback on documentation. It lists various trademarks of Digital Equipment Corporation, Digital Research Inc., and Intel Corporation.
