VT50-Series Copier

User's Manual

Order Number: EK-VT5C-OP

This manual describes the VT50-Series Copier, an optional, integral electrolytic hardcopy device for DECscope video terminals. It provides immediate, inexpensive, and convenient hardcopy directly from the terminal screen, though not necessarily with typewriter-like quality.

The copier operates by passing electric current through specially moistened paper, causing a chemical reaction on the printing blade (anode) to darken characters. It functions within the terminal's shell and is ideal for applications not requiring excessive hardcopy.

Key aspects covered include:

  • Installation: Detailed steps for unpacking, installing the printing blade and paper roll, and moistening the wick pad. The copier should be set up before the terminal is powered on.
  • Testing: Instructions on how to test the copier by pressing the COPY key, which should activate the motor and produce a hardcopy of the screen contents.
  • Operation: Pressing the COPY key prints the entire screen. An "Auto-Copy Mode" allows line-by-line copying based on cursor movement and is entered/exited by SHIFT + COPY. Output is retrieved by lifting the Detent Lever and tearing the paper.
  • Programming: The COPY key functions (Copy Screen, Enter Auto-Copy Mode, Exit Auto-Copy Mode) can also be controlled by software using specific Escape Sequences. The terminal uses XOFF/XON flow control during copying to manage data flow from the host and prevent data loss.
  • Maintenance: Routine tasks include changing paper (indicated by a blue line), replacing the anode (printing blade), cleaning the helix wires, and re-moistening the wick pad. The manual provides a six-step summary for these tasks and warns against operating without paper.
  • Specifications: It is an electrolytic copier using facsimile technology, capable of printing 80 columns on continuous form paper at 30 lines per minute (worst case). It supports page-by-page and auto-copy modes, with both operator and software control.
  • Interfacing and Parts: Lists physical and electronic controls, spare part order numbers for paper and anodes, and environmental requirements.
