StorageWorks HSZ20 Lithium and Lead Acid Battery Removal Instructions

Order Number: EK-Z20BR-IN

This document provides detailed instructions for removing Lithium (NVRAM coin cell) and Lead Acid (cache) batteries from an HSZ20 storage system.

Key points include:

  • Warning: Lead-acid batteries are high-energy devices; avoid contact between their tabs and conductive surfaces to prevent injury or equipment damage.
  • Required Tools: Flat-head, Phillips-head, and #10 TORX-Head screwdrivers, plus side cutters.
  • Removal Process Overview:

    1. Remove Controller from Subsystem: This involves powering off, disconnecting cords, removing the subsystem door and side cover, detaching angle brackets, and finally freeing and sliding out the controller.
    2. Remove Controller Cover: Screws (flat-head and pan) are removed, and the cover is slid forward to detach.
    3. Remove Batteries (Specific Steps):
      • Cache Battery (Lead Acid): Disengage its latching cable connector and slide it out of its tray.
      • NVRAM Coin Cell Battery (Lithium): Requires separating the top PCB from the controller, inverting the PCB, and then carefully cutting the battery's positive and negative leads with side cutters.
  • Disposal: Batteries should be returned to a Digital Equipment Corporation Service Center or recycled at a local hazardous material disposal facility according to regulations.
