This document is an addendum to the VAXft 3000 Site Preparation and Installation Guide, specifically for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) who wish to mount VAXft 3000 BA22 boxes into custom 19-inch cabinets.
The key design and installation considerations outlined are:
- Mounting Style: OEMs must use the rackmount version of the VAXft 3000, not the office pedestal version, as it comes with a rackmount base for support and airflow.
- Weight & Structure: The BA22 boxes are very heavy (up to 510 lbs for two units). The cabinet and rail system must be robustly designed to support this weight with a safety margin, distributing the load across both front and rear rails using custom-designed shelves or angle brackets.
- Center of Gravity: The boxes are shallow and front-heavy, posing a tip hazard. Anti-tip measures (like a front foot plate or bolting the cabinet to the floor) are necessary, especially during transport.
- Heat & Airflow Management: Each BA22 box generates significant heat (2557 BTUs), requiring the cabinet to dissipate up to 6138 BTUs for a two-box system. Ample air intake and exhaust (minimum 35 sq in) are needed. The BA22 boxes have top-to-bottom airflow, and any additional cabinet fans must not obstruct this. Active cooling may be required if ambient temperatures exceed 23.8°C (75°F).
- Grounding: A strong common ground is essential between the two BA22 boxes and to the cabinet ground, requiring conductive mounting rails.
- Power Distribution: Each VAXft 3000 BA22 box has its own power cord. It's crucial to avoid a single point of failure (e.g., using one power controller for both boxes).
- Cable Management: All cables connect to the front of the units and must be routed appropriately, either to the sides or, in taller racks, between the units.
In essence, the document provides critical guidelines for OEMs to ensure the structural integrity, thermal management, electrical safety, and stability when integrating VAXft 3000 systems into their own rack enclosures.
