OpenVMS Systems Operations Guide: VAX 8600 Systems

This document is the OpenVMS Systems Operations Guide for VAX 8600 Systems, published in February 1993.

It serves as a quick reference guide for basic VAX 8600 system operations, focusing on booting and console operations.

The guide covers:

• Console Subsystem Overview: Describing the console terminal, operator's control panel (indicators and keylock switches), console modes (console and program), and common console commands (e.g., BOOT, HALT, DEPOSIT).
• System Shutdown Procedures: Detailing both orderly shutdowns using SHUTDOWN.COM and emergency shutdowns using CRASH.
• System Boot Procedures: Providing extensive instructions on booting the operating system using command procedures from various drive types (local, HSC), creating and using default boot procedures (DEFBOO.COM, DEFGEN.COM), performing conversational boots to modify system parameters, and booting from alternative directories or during system upgrades.
• Backup Procedures: Explaining the use of Standalone BACKUP for creating full system disk backups, including installation on the system disk or RL02 disk, booting methods for Standalone BACKUP, and backing up the console RL02 disk.
