OpenVMS Systems

This document is an OpenVMS Systems Operations Guide for VAX 8200 and VAX 8300 systems, published in February 1993.

It serves as a quick reference guide for basic system operations, intended for system software support personnel, Digital Services, system managers, and OpenVMS operating system course participants.

The guide covers key operational tasks, including:

• Console Subsystem: Overview of the console terminal, control panel, dual-diskette drive (RX50), and console command language.
• System Boot Procedures: Detailed instructions for booting OpenVMS, including automatic and manual boots, booting from local or HSC drives, using the BOOT58 program, creating and utilizing auxiliary boot command procedures, conversational boot, and booting from different system disk directories or during upgrades.
• System Shutdown Procedures: Methods for orderly shutdowns (SHUTDOWN.COM) and emergency shutdowns (CRASH commands).
• System Backup Procedures: Guidance on using Standalone BACKUP for system disk backups, including installation, booting from disk/floppy diskettes, and backing up the console RX50.
