This document provides instructions for installing optional RAM (Random Access Memory) into Digital VT1000 and VT1200 video terminals.

Key Information:

  • Purpose: To upgrade the memory of VT1000 and VT1200 terminals using 1-megabyte SIMM (Single In-line Memory Module) cards.
  • Memory Capacities:

    • VT1000: Base 1 MB, expandable up to a total of 4 MB.
    • VT1200: Base 2 MB, expandable up to a total of 4 MB.
  • Safety Precaution (Crucial): Emphasizes the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) damaging the memory controller board and SIMM cards. Users are advised to handle components by their covers or edges, avoid contact with circuitry, and use grounding wrist straps or frequently touch the metal chassis to neutralize static.

Installation Steps (Summarized):

  1. Unpack & Check: Verify the correct number of SIMM cards received and inspect for damage.
  2. Disassemble: Turn off and disconnect power from the system box and monitor, remove the monitor, and then carefully remove the system box cover.
  3. Identify Components: Familiarize yourself with the internal components, particularly the RAM controller board.
  4. Remove Memory Controller Board: Carefully detach and remove the memory controller board from the system logic board.
  5. Install SIMM Cards: Place the memory controller board on a static-safe surface (like the power supply's metal cover). Insert the new 1MB SIMM cards into the designated 3MB and 4MB slots on the memory controller board, following a 45-degree insertion, pushing down, and then raising to lock them in place. Remember ESD precautions when handling SIMMs.
  6. Reinstall Memory Controller Board: Place the board back into the system box, aligning connectors and standoffs, and press firmly to secure it.
  7. Reassemble & Reconnect: Replace the system box cover, reposition the monitor, and reconnect all power and video cables.
  8. Verify: Turn on the system and monitor, then check the "Memory Remaining" scale in the Terminal Manager window to confirm the correct total memory (e.g., 3MB or 4MB).

Troubleshooting: If problems occur, recheck the installation steps, and if issues persist, contact Digital Customer Services.
