This document is an installation guide for the TZ87 Tabletop Cartridge Tape Subsystem, intended for its owners. It provides step-by-step instructions for preparing, physically installing, and testing the device.
The installation process covers:
- Preparation: Checking shipment contents, selecting an appropriate site (flat, sturdy, well-ventilated, avoiding dust/humidity), optionally affixing foreign language decals, and critically, completely powering off the host system (including backing up disks and shutting down the OS). No special tools are generally required, though a pointed instrument like a pen is needed for switch adjustments.
- Physical Installation: Configuring the TZ87 by ensuring it has a unique SCSI ID (factory default is 5), disabling parity checking if the system doesn't generate it, and installing a SCSI terminator if it's the last or only device on the SCSI bus. This is followed by connecting the SCSI signal cable to the host system and the power cord.
- Installation Testing: Powering on the TZ87 to run its automatic Power-On Self-Test (POST), observing indicator lights for success or failure, and troubleshooting common issues like cable connections or SCSI termination. Finally, bringing up the host system and configuring it to recognize the new TZ87.
The guide also includes a troubleshooting chart in an appendix, detailing common problems encountered during power-up or operation (e.g., unrecognized device, incorrect SCSI ID, loose cables) and providing recommended solutions. For persistent hardware failures, it advises contacting Digital Services. Upon successful installation, users are directed to the TZ87 Owner's Manual for operational details.
