This document is the Installation/Owner's Manual for the Digital TSZ07 Tape Drive (Order Number: EK-TSZ07-IN-003), published in September 1992. Its primary purpose is to provide users with the necessary information to install and operate the TSZ07 Tape Drive.
The manual is organized into four main chapters and an appendix:
- System Overview (Chapter 1): Describes the TSZ07 as a high-capacity streaming half-inch tape drive designed for data interchange, archival storage, software distribution, and system backup. It is SCSI 2 compatible, capable of reading and writing at 1600 and 6250 bpi. The drive is available in various configurations, including standard cabinet, rack-mountable, and table-top models, supporting both single-ended and differential SCSI.
- Unpacking and Installation (Chapter 2): Provides detailed instructions for site preparation and the unpacking, installation, and configuration of the tape drive for all model types (Table Top, Cabinet, and Rackmountable). This includes guidance on removing packing materials, connecting SCSI and power cables (with specific warnings about termination and power handling), installing cabinet stabilizers, and recommended tools and working space. It concludes with procedures for running diagnostics (MicroVAX, VMS, ULTRIX, and onboard) to verify successful installation.
- Operation (Chapter 3): Explains how to operate the TSZ07, detailing the functions of its front panel controls and indicators (e.g., power switches, LOAD/REWIND, UNLOAD, ONLINE, WRT EN/TEST, DENSITY SELECT, and alphanumeric display). It covers setting the unit address, selecting tape density (including automatic and user-defined options), and provides step-by-step procedures for automatic and manual tape loading and unloading, even addressing high-static tapes. A list of activity messages and error messages is included to assist users in troubleshooting.
- Preventive Maintenance (Chapter 4): Outlines the required routine maintenance for the TSZ07, which is limited to cleaning the tape path (head and general path), sensors, and the air filter. It specifies recommended cleaning agents and frequencies, along with important cautions to prevent equipment damage.
- Accessories (Appendix A): Lists the various accessories available for the TSZ07 Tape Drive, such as cleaning kits, reels, and different SCSI cables and terminators.
Throughout the document, critical cautions and warnings are highlighted, especially concerning electrical safety, proper handling of the equipment, and data integrity.
