StorageWorks RAID Array 200 Subsystem Family Install/Config Gde

Order Number: EK-SWRA2-IG

This document summarizes the successful testing of a redundant data storage system using Novell NetWare SFT III and the StorageWorks RAID Array 200 System. The goal was to verify data availability and fault tolerance for critical, high-storage environments.

The system, configured with two mirrored servers, StorageWorks RAID controllers, and 10GB of storage per side (tested at RAID level 0), leverages SFT III's benefits, which include:

  • Fault tolerance: Maintaining identical memory and disk content on a second server.
  • On-line maintenance: Allowing routine maintenance and hardware upgrades by taking one server offline.
  • Disaster protection: Enabling servers to be placed in different geographical locations.

A comprehensive test suite was performed, simulating various failures such as primary server power down, drive deactivation/failure, mirror server link disconnects, and LAN disconnects. All tests ran successfully, with the servers recovering and re-mirroring data as expected. A specific finding was that NetWare partitions larger than 5.5 GB displayed a temporary message about an "inactive device" or being "not fully mirrored"; however, the partitions correctly re-mirrored within 5-10 seconds, and the system operated normally.

The conclusion confirms that the StorageWorks RAID Array 200 RAID 3-channel Controller Card functions effectively within the Novell SFT III configuration, providing a robust and fault-tolerant storage solution despite the transient message for larger partitions.
