This document is an Illustrated Parts Breakdown (IPB) manual for the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) RD31-A Disk Drive.

Key features and how to use the IPB:

• Major Assembly Locator: An initial index of all illustrations, providing descriptions and figure references.
• Indented Parts List: Parts are listed with asterisks to denote subordination and hierarchy within assemblies, allowing users to identify higher-level assemblies and find alternative parts.

• Column Descriptions: Each part entry includes:

  • Figure & Item Number: Links to the visual illustration.
  • Description: Part name, specifications, and subordination level.
  • DEC Part No.: The ordering number (blank if not assigned).
  • ECO Cut-In: Indicates the Engineering Change Order level, with brackets identifying parts affected by ECOs.
  • Vendor Code/Part No.: For parts not stocked by DEC.
  • Used On Code: Denotes part usage based on specific option variations.
  • Ref Fig No.: Cross-references to figures showing the next higher assembly or more detailed breakdowns.

• Symbol Usage:

  • Hardware Designators (S, W, N, R): Indicate screws, washers, nuts, and retaining rings.
  • @ Symbol: Identifies attaching hardware that is not an integral part of the assembly.
  • (NFR) Symbol: Marks items as "Not Field Repairable."

• Revision History: Tracks printing and ECO levels.

• Comment Sheet: Allows users to provide feedback for future manual improvements.
