MS7AA-FA Memory Module Service Guide

Order Number: EK-MS7AA-SV

This document is a service guide for the MS7AA-FA 2-gigabyte memory module, used in VAX 7000/10000 and DEC 7000/10000 systems.

Its primary purpose is to outline the procedures for identifying and replacing a failing Single In-line Memory Module (SIMM) on the MS7AA-FA, which is populated with 36 64-Mbyte SIMMs.

The guide covers two main methods for identifying a failing SIMM:

  1. From an Operating System Error Log (e.g., OpenVMS): Involves interpreting error syndrome, string, and Memory Interface Controller (MIC) information to locate the SIMM using an isolation matrix.
  2. At the Console Level (if the OS cannot be booted): A more detailed diagnostic process using console commands and memory register examinations to determine the failing SIMM.

Once the failing SIMM is identified, the document provides step-by-step instructions for its physical replacement, including safety precautions such as wearing an antistatic wrist strap. It also lists the part number for the 64-Mbyte SIMM.

The document was published by Digital Equipment Corporation in 1994.
