labk life sciences control system

Order Number: XX-0A13B-C9

This document describes the Digital LAB-K, a flexible, solid-state control system designed for life sciences research, especially in psychology instrumentation. It traces the evolution of psychology instrumentation from early relay-based systems to the need for advanced solid-state technology due to limitations in speed and data analysis.

The LAB-K system, developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) using their K-Series solid-state logic modules and Modular Level Design (MLD), provides high noise immunity and versatile hardware programming. A key feature is its 200-position programming plugboard, which allows researchers to quickly configure and control experiments by connecting plugwires to define logic, sequence events, and manage inputs, outputs, and timing.

LAB-K offers complete experimental control, capable of managing both subject-paced and experimenter-paced studies involving time and event contingencies. It is modular and expandable through various Application Kits (e.g., Input Logic, 0-9 Sequencer, Down/Up Counters, Timing Kits, Variable Interval/Ratio Programmers, Session Timers, IRT Distributors) and accessory options, allowing researchers to customize their systems to meet evolving research needs.

Beyond its standalone capabilities, LAB-K is designed to be computer-compatible, with an interface block available for future integration with DEC computers for data acquisition and control. DEC provides comprehensive corporate support, including extensive documentation, logic training courses, and flexible warranty and field service options for both DEC-assembled and user-assembled units. The document includes detailed examples of how to program multiple schedules and discrete trial experiments, along with a price list for its various components and kits.
