RMS Expert

This document is a user manual for RMS Expert, an intelligent file performance and management tool for VAX/VMS System Managers. Developed by International Digital Scientific, RMS Expert is designed to optimize and organize RMS index files to enhance record access throughput and maximize disk utilization.

The software comprises three main utilities:

1. REVIEW: Analyzes existing RMS index files, reporting on their internal structures and parameters. It provides recommendations for improving performance (access time) or disk utilization and estimates the expected performance gains.
2. OPTIMIZE: Fine-tunes the internal structures and parameters of RMS index files to minimize file fragmentation and achieve optimal disk usage and access time. It creates a new, optimized version of the file.
3. ORGANIZE: Performs "in-place" reorganization and defragmentation of RMS index files. It eliminates levels of indirection (such as RRV and deleted records), reclaims wasted space, and minimizes index levels, thus improving record access and maximizing usable file space. ORGANIZE also includes a journaling capability for disaster recovery.

The utilities can be accessed via DCL commands or a menu-driven interface (REVIEW/INTERACTIVE) and support wildcard characters for file specifications. The manual also covers installation procedures, required system privileges, performance considerations, and descriptions of commands and messages. RMS Expert 1.0 is compatible with VAX/VMS Version 5.0 or later systems.
