This manual describes how to develop application programs using SQL/Services, a client/server component of VAX Rdb/VMS Version 3.1. SQL/Services allows applications on various operating systems, such as MS-DOS, to access DIGITAL Standard Relational Interface (DSRI) compliant databases located on VAX computers (servers). This access is facilitated through an Application Programming Interface (API) of callable routines that enable dynamic SQL statement execution at runtime, with communication handled by DECnet.
The document targets experienced application programmers familiar with the Rdb/VMS SQL interface and a high-level programming language (preferably C) that supports pointer variables. It provides a condensed discussion of dynamic SQL, an overview and detailed reference of SQL/Services API routines and data structures (including SQLDA and SQLCA), programming guidelines for application development (featuring a sample application), definitions of data types and environment variables, and functions usable in filter expressions. The manual also includes sample application code and log file listings.
