This document serves as a reference manual for the VAX Common Data Dictionary (CDD) Utilities, specifically the Dictionary Management Utility (DMU) and the Dictionary Verify/Fix Utility (CDDV). The CDD is a central repository for shared, hierarchically organized data definitions.
The Dictionary Management Utility (DMU) allows users to create and manage the dictionary's structure, including directories and subdictionaries, as well as to maintain history lists and access control lists. It details commands for operations such as backing up, copying, creating, deleting, renaming, and setting protection for dictionary elements.
The Dictionary Verify/Fix Utility (CDDV) is designed to repair damaged dictionary files and optimize their performance and size by reorganizing them. Key CDDV commands include VERIFY to scan for inconsistencies, FIX to repair damaged objects and directories, and COMPRESS to eliminate free space.
The manual is intended for data administrators, system managers, and programmers responsible for the CDD's structure, security, and data definitions, particularly for DMU format dictionaries used with CDD Version 3.4 or earlier, or within CDD/Plus V4.0 and later. It includes detailed command syntax, parameters, qualifiers, restrictions, usage notes, required privileges, and error messages for both utilities.
