OpenVMS EDT Reference Manual

This document is the OpenVMS EDT Reference Manual, published by Digital Equipment Corporation in May 1993. It serves as a comprehensive reference for the EDT interactive text editor and is intended for all users.

1. Part I: EDT Features Overview: Introduces the core functionalities of EDT, including its three distinct editing modes:

   • Keypad Mode: A screen editor utilizing the numeric keypad, special keyboard keys (e.g., BACKSPACE, DELETE), and control keys, often with primary and alternate (GOLD key) functions.
   • Line Mode: The default mode, where users type commands at a prompt, using qualifiers and specifiers to manipulate text and session settings (e.g., SET and SHOW commands).
   • Nokeypad Mode: Another screen editor that uses English words and abbreviations for commands, which also form the basis for keypad key definitions. This section also covers the Journal Facility (for session recovery), Startup Command Files (for customizing sessions), Defining Keys (remapping/creating key functions), and EDT Macros (grouping line-mode commands).

2. Part II: EDT Keypad Commands: Provides detailed, alphabetical descriptions of all commands and functions available in keypad mode, including their key sequences, purpose, and examples.

3. Part III: EDT Line Commands: Offers detailed, alphabetical descriptions of all commands, qualifiers, and specifiers used in line mode, along with their functions and examples.

4. Part IV: EDT Nokeypad Commands: Contains detailed, alphabetical descriptions of all commands, qualifiers, and specifiers available in nokeypad mode, complete with their functions and examples.

In essence, the manual is a detailed guide to every command and feature of the OpenVMS EDT text editor, categorized by its different operating modes.
