VAX-11 FORTRAN IV-PLUS, Version 1.3

This document describes VAX-11 FORTRAN IV-PLUS, Version 1.3, an extended FORTRAN implementation based on the American National Standard (ANSI) FORTRAN, X3.9-1966. It is designed to operate under the VAX/VMS operating system, taking advantage of its floating point and character string instruction sets, and virtual memory.

The compiler includes extensive extensions to the ANSI standard, such as support for general expressions, mixed-mode arithmetic, additional data types (CHARACTER, BYTE, INTEGER2, LOGICAL2), type*size notation, and various statements including IMPLICIT, Block IF-THEN-ELSE, ENTRY, OPEN/CLOSE, INCLUDE, PARAMETER, and PROGRAM. It also enhances I/O capabilities, allows 15-character identifiers, and includes debug statements. Additional features encompass standard calls to system service procedures, symbolic debugger symbol generation, and sharable code. The compiler incorporates optimizations like common subexpression elimination, invariant expression removal from DO loops, and constant folding.

Minimum hardware required is any valid VAX/VMS operating system configuration, with VAX/VMS Version 1.6 as the prerequisite software. An FP780 floating point accelerator is an optional hardware component. VAX-11 FORTRAN IV-PLUS is classified as a DIGITAL Supported Software Product. DIGITAL installation is required for software product support, with no charge if performed at the time of system installation, but an add-on fee otherwise.

Ordering information specifies that the product is available only on floppy diskette medium. Various single-use license options are available, differing in the inclusion of binaries, documentation, and support services. Update options are also provided for users with expired or non-expired support warranties, typically distributing binaries on the appropriate medium.
