Digital StorageWorks UltraSCSI Bus Expanders and Converter (DWZZC series) User's Guide

Order Number: EK-DWZZC-UG

This document is the User's Guide for the Digital StorageWorks UltraSCSI Bus Expanders and Converter (DWZZC series), published in November 1997.

The guide primarily details two types of tabletop expanders:

  1. DS-DWZZC-AA (Single-Ended Expander): Extends a single-ended UltraSCSI bus between devices by up to 20.5 meters (67.3 feet).
  2. DS-DWZZC-DA (Differential Expander/Converter): Extends and converts a bus between a differential UltraSCSI device and a single-ended UltraSCSI device by up to 25.5 meters (83.7 feet).

Both models are UltraSCSI (FAST 20) compliant, supporting data transfer rates up to 40 MB/sec. They are designed to operate transparently on the SCSI bus, meaning they do not use SCSI IDs. Key features include overload protection, shielding against ESD and EMI, automatic bus reset functionalities, and glitch elimination for reliable data transmission.

The guide provides comprehensive instructions for installing and configuring these expanders, covering aspects like:

  • Determining SCSI bus configurations (end-bus or mid-bus).
  • Selecting and connecting VHDCI (Very High Density Cable Interconnect) compatible cables and connectors.
  • Setting internal termination switches for proper bus operation.
  • Understanding and troubleshooting TERMPOWER error statuses via an LED indicator.

A critical caution highlighted is that the AC-DC power converters are model-specific and not interchangeable, as using the wrong converter can damage the unit. Additionally, misconnecting differential and single-ended cables on the differential expander can lead to bus failure.
