This document provides release notes for the Compaq AlphaStation XP900, issued in August 1999, detailing various hardware, software, and firmware considerations.
Key points include:
- Online Resources: URLs are provided for product information, technical documentation, and firmware/patch updates.
- IDE Drives: Lack ID renaming support, which can cause naming conflicts in cluster configurations (DS10s, ES40s, XP900s). All drives run at 16 MHz.
- Windows NT Requirements: Service Pack 4 is not supported. NT 4.0 requires Service Pack 3 for EV6 Rev 2.3 processors, and Service Pack 5 will be required for Rev 2.5 EV6.
I/O Considerations:
- The ELSA Gloria synergy PCI graphics adapter (Compaq p/n 400712-B21; Digital Classic p/n SN-PBXGK-BB) must be installed in the bottom two PCI slots (logical 14/15, physical 1/2) with SRM console version 5.4-2.
- The KZPCM-DA PCI to 2-channel UltraSCSI and Ethernet combo adapter does not have a connection point for the disk activity LED.
Ethernet: Auto-negotiate mode is recommended for 100 MHz operation, configurable via the SRM console (set ew*0_mode auto-negotiate).
- TLZ10 Tape Drive: If installed post-purchase, the CD-ROM must be moved from the upper-right storage bay to bay 3 to accommodate the tape drive.
SRM Console Commands:
- The
mc_cable diagnostic test does not work properly with SRM console V5.4-2, but a fix is planned.
- The
show fru command is not yet supported, with future support intended.
- When switching to the remote management console (RMC), only "MC" of the escape sequence is echoed, which is normal behavior.
Software Compatibility: Users are advised to recompile programs translated from VAX to Alpha, as older translation tools like VEST/TIE may not meet architectural requirements for EV6 Alpha processors, leading to potential issues.
- USB Ports: USB support is not available.
